Dairy Goat milk and goat milk cheese and yoghurt are the health food alternatives for the lactose intolerant and for dairy allergic babies. Dairy goat farming is also the answer to Africa’s malnutrition problems.

Did you know that more people worldwide drink goat’s milk than cow’s milk. It’s only in South Africa where this fine product has not taken the market by storm.

Anyone who visits Europe will soon become aware that goat’s milk is widely used. In France for instance there are well over one million dairy goats and small producers throughout the country make hundreds of varieties of goat’s milk cheeses. Goat’s milk on its own can be a valuable source of nutrients in the same way cow’s milk is. But what does it taste like? Well, it has been described as sweeter and creamier than cow’s milk, but some critics have also described it as tasting like "goat". Makes one wonder why the same critics then overindulge in the likes of the ever popular Feta and Haloumi cheese, both products traditionally manufactured from goat’s milk. And by the way, then one must argue that cow’s milk tastes like "cow"! It is best to form ones own opinion. Like caviar, one cannot expect everyone to appreciate the taste of goat’s milk and all the wonderful products manufactured from it.

Goat’s milk contains finer globules of cream than cow’s milk, and they are dispersed throughout the milk. This gives it a smoother, creamier taste. It also means that goat’s milk can be frozen, and when later defrosted, it is usually pleasant to drink. Keen chefs will notice that when whipped, goat’s milk cream is bulkier due to its composition. It also contains lower levels of lactose than cow’s milk and is often a wise alternative for those infants that appear to be allergic to cow’s milk. The smart people often describe this condition as being lactose intolerant. Having said that, there is just no milk as good as mother’s milk, and every mother should strive to feed her baby in this way.

There is a myth that goat’s milk is medicine. It is not medicine, it is food....good food! We suspect that this myth came about because in years gone by, it was used to substitute cow’s milk for people who suffered from ulcers and colon problems. Once again, it’s finer composition allows better digestibility for those on the wrong side of 40.
